Skiing
Artoo
The desert sequence was the first shot of Star Wars filmed. According to Skywalking, Lucas’ biography, Artoo was not working for most of the day, and as a result he had to be pulled on sand-colored skis. This might explain the shot that accompanies Threepio’s line "I’ve got to rest," where you see Artoo move, but don’t see his feet. Same goes for the shot that accompanies "where do you think you’re going?" and Artoo’s parting shot. |

Differing Artoo bodies, continued
In the close-up shots of Artoo in the desert sequence, as he spins his head around, the empty small blue-outlined rectangle with a blue dash above it has now been filled in, and the large blue rectangle beside that is empty. This remains for most of the desert sequence. It changes to the correct configuration as soon as he is shot by a Jawa, but when he falls, the blue-dash outline square has been filled in, as well as the large blue rectangle. That makes three heads so far. |

Look What You've Done! I'm backwards!
As Threepio stops by the immense Krayt dragon skeleton, the footage is reversed. This occurs when a director or editor purposely or accidently reverses the negative so that it is flipped horizontally. The oil stain on Threepio's shoulder is the giveaway. Star Wars has a lot of these reversed shots, which always struck me as odd since almost nothing in Star Wars is symmetrical. Look at costumes such as Vader, Chewie, Threepio, Stormtroopers, and Artoo. They all have something (Vader’s chestplate, Chewie’s bandoleer, Threepio’s legs, a stormtrooper’s knee-pads, and Artoo’s anatomy) that keeps them from being shown backwards. |

Special Edition Dusk
Seen here is the first insertion of new elements in the Star Wars Special Edition. The sky has been extended with a digital matte painting, and an artificial tilt down camera move has been added. The whole Jawa canyon sequence has been color-adjusted so that the scenes appear to take place at dusk, as opposed to the original version, where it suddenly grows dark in a short period of time. |

Jawas
Datchcha is the chief of the Jawa tribe which travels this patch of Tatooine desert. He is an adventurer known in Jawa circles for having taunted a Krayt dragon and lived to tell about it. Dathcha is skilled with the Jawa ionization blaster. Jek Nkik is a lieutenant of sorts to Dathcha. He is a clan-mate to Het Nkik, a Jawa seen later in the cantina. Jek is in love with the headstrong city Jawa Aguilae. Note in this still the difference in colors. The Special Edition has made the whole sequence considerably rosier to match the dusk conditions seen at the sandcrawler. |
